Which of these would you rather see on your dash?
Hey @staff. This is a perfect example of why collapsed reblogs is such a bad idea. Seeing the full thread, you go like this:
😮 ooh, that's cool
😀 "they're free," hehe!
🤣 "16 cents," perfection!!
I have achieved joy, I feel positive feelings toward Tumblr, I want to engage, I want to stay, my eyeballs land on more ads, you make more money, everyone wins! 🎉
Seeing the collapsed thread, you go like this:
😮 ooh, that's cool
😐 "16 cents"? yes, that's literally what the pic shows, not sure why you felt the need to say that
There is no motivation for me to uncollapse the reblog chain—it looks like a boring conversation about the denominations of coins. And even if I do uncollapse it, you've ruined the joke by showing me the punchline before the setup. I am sad, Tumblr is boring, I go elsewhere to entertain myself, I see less ads, you make less money, everyone loses. 😥
Reblog chains are the best thing about Tumblr. They are your unique super power. They are the thing that makes people screenshot Tumblr and share it around. Why on earth would you kneecap them??
I don't know exactly how you plan to implement this. Give people the option to keep them collapsed if there truly are people who are annoyed by how long they can get (you already have a version of this feature), but don't collapse them for everyone or new users by default. Please. It will make Tumblr so much more boring.
Haha that's a funny meme caption you posted over someone's art!
...So where's the source?
No?? No??????
Putting a silly impact font caption over art doesn't change the art beyond adding an additional joke. Reposting it without credit is still a crappy thing to do and nobody should ever do it.
It takes less than a minute to include a link to the source, or if the source is a Tumblr post, you can reblog the original with your funny meme caption. But when you put a caption over the image it can fuck with reverse image searchers like Google or Saucenao and make it impossible for them to find the actual source
Respect artists, it really isn't hard in the vast majority of cases. Anyone who says it's "too difficult" to get a source for stuff they want to post is being a lazy asshole.
(Also I hate that this doesn't go without saying w some people so I have to say this, but to anyone who reads this please do not go out of your way to find the person who left these tags and harass them. Just leave them be, okay?)
Don’t Add Fanfiction To Your Goodreads Shelf
Hi folks, I know some of you like to use Goodreads to track all your reading and don’t want to distinguish between books and fanfiction.
I am, however, begging you not to do this. It is extremely jarring and disconcerting to be a fic author and find your works somewhere in the wild where you did not personally put them. Fics are not books, are not published in the same way as books, and exist in a precarious legal space.
Please don’t attempt to elide the separation that exists between fandom and the world of official publishing.
update to add:
if you are a fic author and you find your fic on Goodreads, you can get it removed!
Here’s how:
- First, you gotta go to Goodreads support Contact Us page. Fill out the form as follows:
- What can we help you with? - Book records: adding or editing
- What device were you using? - this answer doesn’t matter
- Are you reaching out as a publisher, author, neither, or both? - Author
- What does your inquiry relate to? fanfiction recorded as book
- In the main body of the question, include the link(s) to the Goodreads record(s) for your fic(s)
- Hit submit!
- Someone should contact you pretty fast; I got a reply within a couple hours, even though it was a Sunday afternoon. They wanted me to confirm that it was a fanfic and asked me to provide proof of authorship which was kinda weird to answer but I was like “uhhh my tumblr is the same handle as my ao3 does that count?” and that seemed to go over just fine.
- Once they say they’ve deleted the records it should no longer be searchable although for whatever reason the direct links apparently still work. That’s Amazon for ya I guess.
I hope this helps some of my fellow fic authors!
hey guys please reblog this version
I’ve seen multiple people reblogging the original post with tags saying how they have struggled to get their fics taken down off Goodreads & I want folks to know that it IS possible
